Wedding on a Budget - it doesn't have to be tacky

An outdoor wedding is a dream for many brides. Niagara Parks offers many absolutely beautiful places to get married outdoors.

A few of Niagara Parks have covered pavilions that you may be able to reserve for your reception for a reasonable fee. I am not certain whether they will reserve it to you for a wedding, but you can find out more by contacting the phone number on this link.

Niagara Parks allows wedding pictures to be taken throughout the parks; however, they will not reserve times or locations. These are picked on a first come - first served basis, but there are so many great locations for pictures, it's doubtful you'll not find somewhere wonderful. My favourite outside location for wedding pictures is at Oakes Garden Theatre, in the little secret garden area on the bridge. Any photographer in the area will know to where I am referring.

The Niagara Parks Floral Showcase now allows bookings for indoor photographs. There is an hourly fee involved, it is a great backup plan in the case of rain.

Before you make your wedding plans, remember that financial problems are the leading cause of divorce.

It's difficult for me to understand why so many couples will set themselves up for trouble by spending tens of thousands of dollars on a fairytale wedding, and once the puffy credit card bills arrive in the mail, the fairytale quickly turns to a horrible nightmare.

If you can afford a lavish wedding or you have family willing to pay for your special day, by all means, enjoy it! These pages are not designed to dissuade you from having an expensive wedding. I'm only trying to give a few tips to those who are on a more strict budget so that they may still have an elegant, yet affordable wedding in the Niagara Region.

In July of 2005, Canada passed a law to legalize gay marriage.

Be aware that because Canada will recognize your marriage, some other countries may not.

Belgium and the Netherlands are other nations that allow homosexual marriage.

In recent years Niagara Falls, Ontario has become a very popular location for such partners wishing to exchange wedding vows.

Many chapels and churches will still not perform gay marriages for religious reasons. However, the following locations will be pleased to assist you with your plans:

Sheraton Fallsview and Conference Centre - 1-800-618-9059

Two Hearts Wedding Chapel ; 5127 Victoria Ave, Niagara Falls, ON
Contact: Rev Karen Hansen, Phone: 905-371-3204, 1-866-251-1115 (toll free)

Doreen M. Peever, Lay Chaplin, Unitarian Congregation of Niagara, 223 Church St, St. Catharines, ON

Recently, we helped a broke family member plan a "quickie" wedding in Niagara Falls. Because we didn't have a lot of time to plan, and because we didn't have a lot of cash around, we were very limited with our choices. However, we couldn't have been happier than the way things turned out.

Since the wedding was in October, and it was quite cold last year, an outdoor ceremony was not an option. After a lot shopping around, we decided upon the getting the assistance of the Wedding Company of Niagara.

They perform weddings both inside their chapel and other areas of Niagara including, but not limited to, Oakes Garden Theatre, atop the Minolta Tower, the Gazebo at Niagara-on-the-Lake and even aboard the Maid of the Mist! How cool would that be?

We opted to have the ceremony in the adorable, little chapel.

We chose the Simplicity Package, which included the ceremony, commemorative certificate and music for a mere $400.00. For another $50.00 per hour, we could have rented their basement hall for a reception, but since we only had 20 people in attendance, we chose to go elsewhere. I'm not sure whether they still offer their hall or not.

We couldn't say enough good things about this wedding company.

If you have just a few people coming to your wedding, why not consider the Wayside Chapel. This would be a unique wedding, but you could still say, "Yes, Grandma, we were married in a church."

How about a wedding at the new Fallsview Casino ? They have some reasonable wedding packages.

The easiest way to trim your wedding costs is to trim your guest list. That's why a wedding in Niagara Falls may be a good idea. Try and persuade your close family members and closest friends to join you, at their expense. You could suggest that their presence be your gift to you. You can have a wonderful vacation and a beautiful wedding all at once.

You probably know this already but a great place to purchase wedding decorations and favours is Ebay. Think about it, a lot of things such a pew bows or decorative lights are not destroyed in one use, and yet many brides and grooms are left wondering what to do with them after their celebration.

Just go to and type what you are looking for into the search bar. You may be surprised at the great things you can find.

I managed to get 20 beautiful pew bows for $5.00 on Ebay. Yes, they had been used before, but you would never, ever guess.

Dollar Stores are also a great place to purchase wedding favours. For instance, we were able to purchase 3-pack of wedding bubbles for just a dollar. They had either a bride and groom topper or doves. Everyone had their own bottle and blew bubbles at the bride and groom as they exited the church. Confetti and rice are banned at many places due to the mess they make.

PLAN AHEAD whenever possible. For example, you can purchase decorative little white lights after Christmas for next to nothing, but if you're looking for "wedding lights" in April, you'll pay top dollar.
